Seville is the capital of the autonomous community of Andalusia. It has 694,000 inhabitants which make it the most populated city in Andalusia and the fourth in Spain behind Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. The metropolitan area has a population of 1,500,000 inhabitants.

The origins of Seville were on an island of the river Guadalquivir in the present area known as the Alfalfa. Its name was "Spal" and it is not known very well if it was founded by the Phoenicians or the Tartessians. The Romans took the city to the Carthaginians in the 206th century BC. Later in the place that currently is the city of Seville, the emperor Julio Cesar founded the colony "Lulia Romula Hispalis".

During the Muslim invasion, it was the first seat of a Cora and later capital of the kingdom of Taifas until becoming capital of the Almohade Empire in Al-Andalus. In the year 844 was sacked by the Vikings that came up the Guadalquivir River.

In 1248 it was incorporated to the crown of Castile to the being reconquered by Fernando III who was the first one to be buried in the cathedral of Seville.

After the discovery of America in 1492, Seville became the economic center of the Spanish empire.

The old town of Seville is the largest in Spain and one of the largest in Europe next to Venice and Genova. Its historical and cultural heritage constitutes a city that receives both national and international tourism, occupying the third place in tourists behind Barcelona and Madrid. Among its most representative monuments are the Cathedral of Seville, the Giralda, the Alcázar, Archivo de Indias and the Torre de Oro, as well as the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza, María Luisa Park and its neighborhoods as well known as El Barrio of Triana. Of all these Monuments, the first three, have been declared Patrimony of the Humanity by UNESCO in 1987.

Seville has a seaport located 80 km from the coast of the Atlantic Ocean which makes it the only Spanish city with an inland seaport. Said port is located in the river Guadalquivir and the mouth in the city of Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

With the celebration of the Ibero-American Exhibition of 1929, Seville experienced a great urban development creating new buildings and parks such as the Parque de María Luisa or the Plaza de España. The Expo of Seville 1992 left as legacy improvements in the island of the Cartuja as well as the arrival of the first train of High speed from the city of Madrid.
